Johanna St Michaels is a writer and director whose films Penthouse North (2014) and The Islands Amid The World (2011) explore the effects of time on people and places that slowly become neglected.
“To me, Matt Johnson represents everyone in a way in this film: One man’s struggle to understand the brave new world of the 21st Century.”
Matt Johnson of the English band The The,known for his intensely personal and political songs, has remained silent as a singer-songwriter for the last 15 years. Conflicted by creative inertia, he has observed from the sidelines as corporate state propaganda has swamped the cultural airwaves.
Students of scriptwriting and film-making tend to be bombarded by hard-and-fast rules, one of which says ‘your film must have incident’. If there isn’t a steady barrage of stuff going on, it suggests, you’re going to lose the audience’s interest. Like all such rules, it’s not hard to find examples which break it. One such is Johanna St Michaels’ new documentary The Inertia Variations, which, as the name suggests, mostly focuses on a lack of incident.
The Inertia Variations, a documentary by Johanna St Michaels, follows the mercurial Matt Johnson as he battles with feelings of disenchantment & writer’s block.

NYC PREMIERE In her heyday, Swedish bombshell Agneta ruled the world from her fabulous Central Park West apartment. Though she once appeared on the covers of Playboy and Cosmo, the former model/actress now struggles to pay the rent, taking in roommates and international guests to make ends meet. Faced with eviction, will she finally face up to unforgiving reality, or remain stuck in the glories of her past? Revealing her subject in all her contradictory complexity, Johanna St Michaels crafts a sensitive portrait of aging and denial.
